Common Questions | Why Won't My Honda Accord Start?

My Honda Accord Won't Start?

If your Honda Accord isn't starting, don't panic. There are a lot of potential reasons why this may be the case, and we'll go through some of them together. Some of the common reasons are issues with the key FOB or starter.

The Key FOB

The key FOB is how your car knows it's really you who is asking to turn it on, and acts the same way a manual key does. Unlike a manual key though, key FOBs require a battery to work. Over time this battery will get drained through natural use, normally lasting between three and five years. You can test how much battery your FOB has left by trying to use it at different distances from your car. If you can use it from far away, the battery has plenty of charge and can put out a wide reaching signal. If you have to place your key FOB right on the starter for it to work, your battery is likely nearing the end of its lifespan.

Another possibility with the key FOB is if it is improperly programmed. Your key FOB contains a transponder chip that lets it identify itself to your Honda Accord. If this transponder is improperly programmed or stops working, your key FOB will not be able to provide the signal your Honda Accord is looking for.

Your Honda Accords Starter

The starter is what starts your Honda Accord's engine. It does this by providing the initial rotation to the engines crankshaft, which then initiates the engines internal combustion that keeps it running. If your starter is not working properly then it may be unable to give the crankshaft that first rotation, preventing it from starting the engine. Furthermore, the starter itself receives a signal from the ignition switch. So if your ignition switch isn't working it can negatively affect the starters ability to function. A faulty start may be identified by a clicking sound when trying to start the car as the starter solenoid attempts to engage, but is unable to.

Next Steps

These are just a couple of reasons why your Honda Accord is unable to start.
